Why can the early encounter look different?

The first-boss version receives orange visual changes. A later Good patch adds orange trails to charged attacks and fixes second-phase actions incorrectly occurring in phase one at difficulty one. Compare like difficulty levels when learning the sequence.

Does the patch establish a safe universal combo?

No. The notes revise behavior, damage scaling and a chain of charged vertical strikes, but do not supply a complete tested punish sequence for every build. Watch the cue and keep difficulty and version attached to any more specific strategy.
